Hike of the Week: Hubert's Hike

Kicking off the Hike of the Week blog series, part of our month-long celebration of hiking at Stratton, is one of the classic hikes to Stratton's summit. The route covers 1.63 miles on well-known intermediate terrain, leading to views of Mt. Equinox and Manchester valley, Mt. Ascutney, Mt. Tabor and Styles Peak. It's a great trail to get your hiking boots dirty if you're new to hiking Stratton.

Hubert's Hike to Stratton's Summit
Route: Lower Standard - Interstate – East Meadows – Janeway Junction – Upper Standard – Summit
Difficulty: More difficult to the summit

Start on the maintenance road underneath the Gondola to mid-mountain. At mid-mountain, continue uphill to the right on the work road to cross under the Gondola, where you'll travel up Interstate to East Meadow. Turn left, heading up East Meadow to a short, steep section up Janeway Junction then left, through Gondola wind screen fencing and underneath the Gondola to the summit. The steep climb up Janeway Junction is rewarded with spectacular views. Start out early enough and you may even run into the man whom this route is named for – our daring and dedicated photographer, Hubert Schriebl.

Travel is mostly on gravel work road, then grassy ski trail for final climb through East Meadow and Janeway Junction to the summit. For an easier route, skip the left turn up East Meadow and continue following the gravel work road to the summit. Download a map here, or try a guided hike

Dogs are welcome on the mountain! See the American Hiking Society's recommendations for hiking with your dog.

Happy trails!

  1. It's a really nice honor when you consider it's a national award. It makes you think back over the years, about the number of coaches and student-athletes you've been involved with. It's all about the journey and memories -- all the great people you've been around.

  2. The most strenuous hike on the mountain is starting from the base and hiking up Standard (follow the gondola to the top.) For a fit hiker, it should take about 1 hour. I compare it to doing the stair master on the highest level for an hour straight. A real butt and thigh burner. On the way down, take the westerly route through the meadows and enjoy amazing views of Mt Equinox. After all, you deserve it after your summit.

(By the way, I never said down was easy!)
