160 Snowguns and Counting: Snowmaking Update

It’s beginning to feel a lot like winter as the sweet sound of snow guns echoes around the mountain. We are off and running after firing up the snowmaking system Sunday to cover Stratton in its first coat of white.

Our snowmakers promised a snowy morning, and they delivered! More than 160 snow guns are trained on Frank’s Fall Line, Polar Bear, Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, Old No. 8 and Bear Bottom, with a few extra land guns firing in the Base Area. Snowmakers are looking to expand to the lower mountain tonight by blowing snow on Runaway, Yodeler Express and Suntanner.

This window of cold, dry air is forecast to continue through today and tonight, giving us a nice shot at making a good first layer of snow. Opening Day is in our sights, and in no time at all, this new snow will host our first tracks.

The roar of the snowguns, the sight of white trails and the feel of snow underfoot prove that winter has truly begun. And that is a great feeling.

  1. Any chance you will be opening before the 21st? If no, is it a bear issue?

    1. Still planning on the 21st as we watch the weather over the next few weeks! I don't believe there are any conflicts with our local bears at the moment.
