Why It's Good to Ride with Girls

Guest post by Jenny Dempsey, manager of Syd and Dusty's and one of the friendly faces behind the Girls Time Out Snowboard Camp, March 15-17.

I have been snowboarding for over 13 years and I can still remember how intimidating it was to learn. I was nervous about everything: from being the only girl in a lift line of 50 to linking my first toe side turn. A group of my guy friends taught me, so I had to learn fast and ride hard to keep up with them. It was hard learning from a group of guys, especially when I started hitting rails and jumps. Men genetically have more muscle mass than women, so men have an easier time building strength. It was difficult for the guys who were teaching me to understand that.

These days, Jenny butters with the best of 'em.
I found a huge difference when I started finding more girlfriends to ride with. The moral support of a group of girlfriends is amazing! Think about how much fun it is when you are having a girl’s night. Laughing till your stomach hurts at jokes that no one but your group of girls would understand.

... and rides with confidence even in waist deep snow.

Now imagine that out on the slopes. When you have those moments where you feel like giving up, you can look at your girlfriends and laugh! Although learning was tough at times, I couldn't be more thankful that I didn't give up. Snowboarding has become more than a hobby to me, it has become a lifestyle. I've made friends that I would have never of had the chance to meet without snowboarding.

So my advice to any ladies who have always wanted to learn how to snowboard, grab a group of girlfriends and come to Stratton to enjoy a weekend of laughs and memories that you won't be able to experience anywhere else!

The Girls Time Out Snowboard Camp is set for March 15-17, when female riders of all ages and abilities to experience first-class coaching from other lady riders. Special guest Shannon Dunn-Downing, Olympic and X-games medalist, will join for turns and a talk on "Pushing your Limits - Safely." Sign up on stratton.com.
