By The Snow Reporters. Adam Gray & Tyler Lewis
This Saturday, the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum will be inducting six significant figures into their Hall of Fame. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to honor athletes, special contributors, and pioneers of Vermont skiing/snowboarding. The inductees for 2013 are Jeff Brushie & the VTSP, CB Vaughan, Fred Pabst, Emo Henrich, Sverre Caldwell and Ross Powers. This inductee class is extra special for Stratton Mountain because they are three of the major reasons Stratton Mountain is where it is today.
Ross Powers, SMS (Stratton Mountain School) Snowboard Program Director and alumni (1997) attended his first U.S. Open at the young age of 9. Powers competed nationally and was a world champion before turning 18. In the 1998 Winter Olympics Powers took home the bronze medal in the first Snowboard Halfpipe event. Powers returned in 2002 to take the gold and secure his place in the history. Powers joined SMS in 2010 as the Snowboard program director and currently lives in Londonderry, VT with his wife (Marisa) and two daughters (Victoria and Meredith.)
Sverre Caldwell, SMS Nordic Program Director joined SMS in 1980 and has been coaching top-level athletes ever since. Caldwell has coached 28 Junior World Team members, 17 National Team members, 12 Olympians and had at least one World Junior Team member and one Junior National Champion for 17 years straight. U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association named him Coach of the Year three times and has earned dozens of other top quality awards for his top quality coaching.
Emo Henrich, came to Stratton Mountain in 1961, where he built and ran the ski school. For 26 years Henrich provided an unforgettable experience to Stratton Mountain visitors by hiring world-renowned ski instructors. Although Henrich is no longer with us, his spirit still lives strong in the Stratton community. Each year the Stratton Foundation gives out an award called the Emo Henrich Award which recognizes an individuals impact on Stratton through professional excellence and exemplary community service.
If you plan on attending the VT Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame induction at the Stratton Mountain Club, the reception starts at 4pm, followed by the induction ceremony and heavy hor doeuvres, cash bar and silent auction
