Meet Jenny Dempsey, the Supervisor at Syd and Dusty’s in the Village and a shredding Betty! Dempsey grew up skiing at a local mountain just 5 minutes from her New York home. After a short break from skiing at the age of 13 to focus on her soccer career, she found her way back to the mountain at age 17 but this time instead of two skis she tried a snowboard on for size. Since then she’s never looked back. “I learned how to ride at a nearby mountain in New Jersey. My parents don’t ski or snowboard, it was just something I was interested in and they’ve always supported me being active and independent,” explains Dempsey.
About 3 years ago, Dempsey found her way to Stratton as a sales associate at Burton in the Village. Retail made sense to Dempsey because she loves getting someone new stoked on snowboarding. “Selling someone their first board is an awesome feeling,” said Dempsey. Riding isn’t just a hobby for this shredding Betty, it’s a passion, one that she shares with the world through her work at Syd and Dusty’s and NEWS (New England Women’s Snowboarding). NEWS is a women’s snowboarding site that Dempsey blogs for in her spare time. “It’s a great way to stay in the know with events at local mountains or to link up with other girls who ride,” explains Dempsey, “girl shred days are the best!”
Another way Dempsey is giving back to the sport she loves is by participating in the Burton Girls Time Out Camp held at Stratton every winter. She helps in the planning process and assists with video coverage during the camp. “It’s a great way to improve your skills and bond with other shredding Betties! The Stratton Instructors make Girls Time Out so much more than just another camp. I love working and riding alongside these ladies,” shares Dempsey.
When asked where you’d find Dempsey on the hill she explains that it all depends on the day. On a powder day she’ll be cruising through the trees. On a hard packed day, she’ll be free riding just fast enough to give her a rush. When the snow is soft, it’s straight to the parks. “When I’m not snowboarding, I’m usually thinking of snowboarding.” Talk about passion for a sport.
