Venture Vermont: West River Farmer’s Market

August 3-9, 2015 is Vermont Open Farms Week. What better way to celebrate locally grown fresh fare than at the farmers market in our own backyard?

When

May 23 – October 10, 2015 | Every Saturday from 9am-1pm

Directions

Intersection of Rt.11 and Rt. 100 in Londonderry, VT. See map here. When you arrive, you can park at the Mill House Tavern restaurant right on Route 11, just steps from the market. Once you see the large barn style restaurant, you know you have arrived. Free street parking is also available, and you may have to use it on busier Saturdays.

What to Expect

Ursa the bear enjoyed the snowboard chair crafted by a local artist.

Expect to experience a farmers market like no other. The market is set right next to the scenic west river, and you can sit at picnic tables next to the river and enjoy the fresh fare you’ll find all around the market. Whether you arrive early in the morning or in the afternoon, vendors will be ready to serve you delicious, fresh prepared food to eat by the river as you enjoy live music (most dates). What I love most about this farmers market is that you’ll find more than just food there. There are multiple booths with displays from local aritists and jewlery designers.  See the full list of vendors here.

What to pack

You’ll want to bring some sort of bag to keep all your goodies in, such as a re-usable grocery bag. You’ll also want to have cash handy. Many vendors only accept cash, so think about what you’ll want to buy before you come so you’ll have a good idea about how much money to bring. If you plan on eating your breakfast or lunch right at the market, or hanging out by the river and listening to music, bring a towel or blanket to sit on the grass with.

Suggested Age Range

The West River Farmer’s market is great for all ages. On September 12, 2015, there is a Youth Market Day, where the younger generation can vend at the market. The goal is to cultivate the next generation of farmers, artists, bakers and entrepreneurs. Do you know a talented youngster who would be great as a vendor? Apply by September 7,2015  here.

What we learned

Get there early. While you may find there is plenty more to explore towards the end of the day, the most popular items go fast. For example, Earth Sky & Time’s famous gluten-free bread was long gone when we arrived at noon.
