Stratton Mountain Trivia: Golf

Golf. It’s not just a Game

Looking for a new way to burn more than 1,500 calories in a low-impact, full-body workout? One that’s fun.

Play golf. Even when you use a cart, golf builds strength, flexibility and balance. The golf swing uses all your major muscle groups; an average player will hit with a full swing some 30 times in a round. For me, that number can be considerably higher.

Walk 18 and you’ll rack up 5-6 miles, that’s 10,000 to 12,000 steps on your Fitbit. And on a mountain course, the aerobic benefits are even greater.

Noted New England architect Geoffrey Cornish took full advantage of the mountain landscape in designing the Stratton course. Opening for golf in 1964, Stratton was one of the first ski areas to offer year-round recreation. Tour all 27 holes.

In the ‘90s, Stratton played host to six LPGA tournaments with scores of players saying it was their favorite stop on the tour citing course design and condition, the spectacular setting, and resort ambiance. Every year, World Golf Hall-of-Famer Jan Stephenson brought her whole family from Australia to enjoy the genuine Stratton hospitality.

While providing a solid test of golf skill and strategy for the pros and low handicappers, the course has been “designed to be playable for any level golfer,” as Golf Digest describes it. Adding, each of the three nine-hole layouts – Mountain, Forest and Lake — offers its “own charm and danger.” Are you game?

With the scenery, a good workout, an exercise in mindfulness … and all that fresh Green Mountain air, count me in. But don’t count all my shots. Check out the daily rates and tee times.
