Cub Club

Hello Cub Clubbers!

It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through the season. With the Olympics underway, it’s been special watching an athlete who once skied in Cub Club compete on the world stage, a great reminder of how far these kids can go. Matt would be incredibly proud.

Reminders:

  • Evaluations and move ups
    • When considering move ups, remember we’re looking for consistency and confidence across all conditions! We are regularly observing kids and working with coaches to develop a plan for each child’s progression. Keep in mind that progress can look different for every child, and we focus on helping each one succeed at their own pace.
    • In addition to this, we wanted to remind you that all move ups will continue to happen on Sundays.
  • Cold Weather and kids clothing
    • This winter has been extremely cold, and in these temperatures proper clothing is really important. Please make sure your child arrives dressed appropriately for the conditions by checking the weather and planning for enough layers. This should include warm base layers, warm socks and neck warmers (and some extra to store in the kid’s cubbies in case they get too cold/wet!!!)
    • We recommend that all kids come with hand and toe warmers each day. We do not have extras available, so please make sure you put some in your child’s cubby so they’re ready to use them whenever they need to.
    • If at any point we feel a child is too cold to continue skiing and does not have appropriate layers or warmers, we will contact families to bring some or for pick up. Remember, we want to keep the kids safe, warm, and comfortable while they’re skiing!
  • Morning drop off
    • At this point in the season, groups are moving more efficiently and heading out on time is very important!!
      • Raccoon, Deer, Wolf, Catamount, Moose, and Bear groups should be ready to leave the room and be on snow by 8:45 a.m.
      • Mouse, Squirrel, and Rabbit groups should be ready to go out by 9:00 a.m.
    • This means all kids should be checked in, geared up, and ready to go by these times!!!
    • If a child arrives late and their group has already left, we cannot guarantee that we’ll be able to place them with the group, and families may be asked to bring them back for afternoon skiing.
  • Pick Up reminder
    • For safety reasons, all coaches are required to bring their entire group back into the building for lunch and end of day pick up. Please do not plan to pick up your kid on the snow or intercept groups to ask coaches to bring the kids inside.

Thank you so much for your understanding and for helping us keep all the kids safe.

If you have any questions during the week, feel free to reach out to Kristi or Tony.

We can’t wait to ski with your kids during the holiday weekend!

Cross Cub

Hi Cross Cub Parents and Skiers,

Can you believe we’re already halfway through February and nearing the end of the season?! As we head into our last holiday weekend, it’s a great time to check the bottoms of your skis and make sure the edges and bases aren’t too worn down. A fresh sharpen and wax can make a big difference . Equipe in the village has been my go-to spot this season.

Despite the extra chilly weather, Mother Nature has delivered plenty of snow, and groups have been having a blast exploring new terrain and skiing through the trees all over the mountain. If we get a few more cold days, please send your children with extra layers and hand + toe warmers to keep them comfortable.

I know February can be the end of the season for some families (and coaches!) as spring sports begin, but if you’re able to stick around into March, we have several fun events planned and would love to see everyone there.

  • March 1 – Last Snowboard Sunday
    • Please email me the week prior so we can be sure we have enough coaches scheduled.
  • March 7 – Parent vs. Child Race (fan favorite!)
    • Parents, you still have a month to get some practice in! Our Cross Cubbers are ready to challenge you on Suntanner — and they’re very motivated by a possible trip to the candy store for a win. Start times will be shared closer to the event.
  • March 14 – The Big Ski
    • If you’ve been in Cub Club before, you know how special this day is. This year, all seasonal programs are teaming up to make it our biggest Big Ski yet in honor of Matt Erickson. More details coming soon.
  • March 15 – Onesie Day
    • Break out your coziest (or funniest!) onesie and join the fun.
  • March 21 – Hot Dogs on the Hill
    • We’ll take our lunch break at the top of Emerald Frost, where coaches will serve hot dogs, snacks, and drinks to all Cross Cubbers.
  • March 22 – Annual Scavenger Hunt
    • Always a hit with the kids — teamwork, skiing, and lots of laughs.
  • March 28 – Ice Cream Social (Last Event of the Season)
    • Join us at 2:00 pm on the Junior School Patio to celebrate a great season together. Please note: Cross Cubbers will not return to skiing after the party.

Looking forward to more great days on snow!

Synergy

Hi Synergy Families,

What an amazing last few weekends of skiing and riding! Mother Nature has been kind to us for the first half of the season, so let’s continue our snow dances and snow penguin offerings! To recap the first half of the season, all of our groups have been working on using various turn-shapes (small, medium, and large radius) to control their speed and incorporating higher and lower edge angles to either create a carved turn or more of a skidded (I say “schmeared”)  turn.

Most of our groups have had the opportunity to finally play in the woods all over the mountain and work on their pivot slips and short-radius turns. Ask your students about the safety rules they follow in the woods and which glades have been their favorite! From a coaching standpoint, we want our students to not only be better skiers in terms of their technique, but also more knowledgeable ski citizens who readily understand the Skier Responsibility Code

Here are some important dates to look out for in March!

  • February
    • We are planning another rock climbing event in the Village, date/time TBD
    • Sat. 2/28 – End of Season Party, 5PM, Jr. Ski School
  • March
    • Sun. 3/1 – Snowboard Sunday (AM SESSION ONLY for Cross Cub & Synergy)
    • Sat. 3/7 – Parent vs. Child Race (Cross Cub & Synergy)
    • Sat. 3/14 – The Big Ski (Cub Club, Cross Cub, & Synergy
    • Sun. 4/15 – Onesie Day (Cross Cub & Synergy)

AAMP

AAMPers,

Wow what a winter! I can’t remember the last time we had such a long stretch of cold. The chill has delivered exceptional conditions, and we certainly have taken advantage of them all. We have skied everything from happy groomed trails to challenging, ungroomed natural terrain on Rising Star, Rick’s Catch and many others. Several have even ventured into the powder filled trees for their first time! So much fun.

We played with our second Alpine racecourse on another bitter cold day that worked out perfectly. We were able to keep moving with quick laps on Old Smoothie and Amex. The vibe was filled with lots of enthusiasm. Even more significant were the improvements made by AAMPers throughout the morning with improvement on every run. Great job to all who attended!

Looking back on how great the last few weeks have been, I would be remiss not to include pictures of the AAMPers with Coach Joe at the top of Upper Kidderbrook on a fabulous sunny day.

In the last few weeks, we have re-visited:

  • pressure along the ski (fore and aft)
  • pressure ski-to-ski (foot-to-foot)
  • steering with our legs separate from our upper body
  • edging with a focus on the inside ski

Each of these focus’ were combined with terrain that helped to emphasize the skill. Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you would like to revisit any skill or activity. We will be happy to accommodate.

Cheers!
